About:

Interactive Learning refers to the learning that occurs when individuals advance their knowledge or understanding through dialogue with each other. Such learners may be either pairs or groups of individuals working together, or an individual or group of learners interacting with a parent, teacher, peer tutor or a computer.

The Centre for Research into Interactive Learning was created in 1992 within Strathclyde University's Department of Psychology to conduct research into Interactive Learning in all of these senses, and to apply its findings to educational practice and occupational training. The Centre is located in its own premises with staff offices, research accommodation, videocoding suite, conference room, computing facilities and secretarial support.

The primary objective of the Centre is to specify the conditions which optimise Interactive Learning and to promote instructional materials which embody the principles so defined.

About:

The Centre for Research on Ageing and Gender [CRAG] is unique in focusing specifically on the interconnections between gender and ageing. Ageing is an area of increasing policy concern, stimulated by recognition of the growth in the older population, the projected costs of pensions and health care, earlier ages of retirement from paid work, changing patterns of consumer behaviour in later life and the opportunities afforded by increased leisure. It is well-known that women form a numerical majority in later life, but less is known about social and economic differences between older women and men.

Objectives: CRAG brings together social scientific expertise to conduct policy relevant research on gender and ageing. The principal aim is to advance understanding of how gender influences the experience of ageing, and how ageing influences gender roles and relationships. This is achieved by:

  • Undertaking research on gender an ageing. Crag members have expertise in a range of research methodologies, including qualitative research, evaluation research, and secondary analysis of large national data sets
  • Providing opportunities for doctoral research in a stimulating environment
  • Working with other disciplines including psychologists, economists, and health specialists
  • Taking a holistic approach, which emphasises the interconnections between health, income and material resources, and social roles and relationships, and how these vary for older men and women.
  • Adopting a life course approach which links socio-economic position, roles and relationships in later life to the earlier biographies of men and women
  • Encouraging scientific exchange through honorary visiting research positions for international scholars
  • Providing opportunities for doctoral research in a stimulating research environment
  • Establishing a research network on ageing and generation associated with the european sociological association
  • Collaborating with user groups concerned with older people's well-being
  • Developing a forum for exchange of information and research
