About:

The Department is in direct continuity with the Institute of Experimental Psychology, founded in 1935. The name was changed to 'Department' upon the move to the present large building shared with the Department of Zoology. The Department is well-equipped for a variety of types of psychological research, and also has an excellent library.

Research interests include:

  • Brain and behaviour relationships, especially involving perception and memory and motor function
  • Human experimental psychology, especially involving attention, memory, human skills and industrial health
  • Social psychology, especially non-verbal communication, long-term relationships and social skills
  • Developmental psychology, especially infant perception and social interaction, emotional development, and development of reading and other cognitive skills

About 300 undergraduates read either Experimental Psychology or PPP (Psychology with Physiology or Philosophy). The size of the graduate research student body is one of the largest of any psychology department in the UK. A number of senior post-doctoral research scientists, many of them long-term, are also attached to the Department.

The Department has research grants from external bodies, including the MRC, BBSRC and ESRC, Health & Safety Executive and private foundations. It also currently holds grants for European programmes of research and also has a wide range of international collaborations.
