Using Motivational Interviewing to Help Smokers Quit Their Addiction
( See the meeting's Web pages.)

October 10-11, 2007

New Brunswick, Middlesex County, NJ

Event sponsored by: University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey [UMDNJ], Tobacco Dependence Program

Motivational interviewing [MI] is a client-centered, non-confrontational, structured counseling approach to helping clients to resolve ambivalence and enhance self-confidence for changing addictive and other behaviors. MI recognizes that clients who need to make changes in their lives approach counseling at different levels of readiness to change their behavior. Helping smokers quit their tobacco use can be a challenging endeavor. Often tobacco users have tried several times to quit smoking and may have been unsuccessful. Or they may have thought about it but not taken steps to change it. This workshop will help the trainee work more effectively with clients who are struggling with achieving or sustaining motivation to quit smoking.

Trainers:

    • Jonathan Krejci, PhD, Director of Training and Research, Princeton House Behavioral Health, Princeton, New Jersey
