About:

Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology [TMIG] was founded in April, 1972 to solve various problems related to aging. TMIG, where approximately 180 staff members work in 33 laboratories or sections, is performing basic research on aging from the aspects of both life science and social science. Because it is located within the same campus as the Tokyo Metropolitan Geriatric Hospital and several other nursing facilities, close collaboration with their clinical staff can easily be accomplished.

During its history of 25 years, TMIG has contributed to the progress of not only gerontology, but also other sciences by its unique research activities. In recent years, however, the problems of aging and of the elderly have become more complex and serious than ever. In order to cope with this situation more flexibly and effectively, the status of the Institute was changed from a public institute to a private foundation in October 1981. In August 1990, the Institute further reorganized its preexisting laboratories into six divisions and the Positron Medical Center. In April 1994, the Department of Mental Health was combined with the Department of Psychiatry, and Departments of Glycobiology and Information Dynamics were newly founded. The purpose of these reorganization was to cover more properly the wide range of aging research.

Since 1984, TMIG has established a firm collaborative relationship with the National Institute on Aging, U.S.A., and the Beijing Geriatric Institute, the People's Republic of China for the purpose of promoting international scientific exchange in the field of gerontology. In June 1986, TMIG was designated by WHO as a Collaborative Center for the Health of the Elderly.

Each year, close to 20 scholars from abroad visit TMIG and conduct collaborative research. Many researchers from TMIG also go abroad to attend scientific meetings or to perform cross-cultural cooperative ventures. It is our sincere hope that TMIG will continue to contribute to Gerontology not only in Japan but on a world wide scale through such exchange programs.
