Event
List:

  1. Breakthrough Developments in Psychiatric Treatments October 26-27, 2007: New York, NY

Event
#1
Detail:

There has been a recent explosion in the understanding of the neurobiology of mental disorders led principally by advances in genetics and functional brain imaging. Practicing clinicians are overwhelmed at the rate at which such advances are being developed and unable to stay abreast of new developments.

The goal of this activity is to have participants begin to view etiology and diagnosis in terms of neurobiology of mental disorders as well as simply phenomenology. They will become more familiar with the latest advances in the neurobiology and be able to apply this information in developing treatment plans. They should incorporate such concepts into their clinical work and continue to do so for a significant period of time.

This course will highlight the latest advances in the neurobiology of the major mental disorders and link these advances to current and expected new treatments. Each major group of disorders will be addressed separately, first in terms of the neurobiology and etiology of the disorder, and then regarding treatments.

Objectives:

  • Distinguish the latest diagnostic criteria for all major psychiatric disorders
  • Define the neurobiological abnormalities underlying psychiatric disorders
  • Apply neurobiological findings to planning treatments
  • Assess and develop treatment plans including biological treatments that are consistent with the latest neurobiological and clinical research
  • Identify the biological mechanisms of commonly used psychiatric treatments
  • Integrate neurobiological and clinical research into developing biopsychosocial models of diagnosis and treatment
