The Institute of Psychiatry [IoP] provides post-graduate education and carries out research in psychiatry, psychology, and allied disciplines, including basic and clinical neurosciences. Opened in 1923 and a school of King's College London [KCL] since 1997, it is the only postgraduate institution in the United Kingdom devoted to the study and practice of psychiatry and related disciplines.

The IoP is devoted to research and the delivery of educational programmes in mental health and associated fields. A range of over 20 programmes (from skills based short courses to full time masters and research studentships) is offered in a multicultural environment that attracts some of the world’s most influential researchers and provides first-class resources, including the largest library in Europe dedicated to psychiatry and its related disciplines.

The Centre for the Economics of Mental Health [CEMH] was established in November 1993 at the Institute of Psychiatry [IoP], King's College London. CEMH is a research-focused unit dedicated to the improvement of mental health policy and practice.

Its goals are to:

  • Influence mental health policy-making and resource allocation by conducting economic evaluations of new or best practice mental health care and prevention interventions or strategies
  • Generate and disseminate new or alternative insights into mental health policy, practice and research
