Objectives:

  • Describe the most recent research on trauma and dissociation, including outcome of psychotherapy in complex PTSD and dissociative disorders
  • Describe contributions of various theories and therapeutic modalities, such as attachment theory, psychodynamic theory, EMDR, psychoanalysis, neurobiology, trauma treatment, somatosensory and creative/expressive art therapies to the treatment of dissociative and trauma-related disorders
  • Describe new treatment techniques for dissociative and trauma-related disorders including pharmacological interventions
  • Identify techniques to promote ego strengthening, skill-building, and integration in pathological dissociation and trauma-related disorders
  • Identify children and adolescents with dissociative and trauma-related disorders along with appropriate treatment
  • Explain developmental processes in the dissociative and trauma-related disorders
  • Cite the developmental issues that (1) affect the relative severity of dissociative pathology and (2) facilitate or impede recovery from dissociative pathology
  • State the research on the interface of posttraumatic stress and dissociation
  • Describe the relationship of dissociation to various personality characteristics
  • Provide state of the art diagnosis that recognizes co-morbidity in dissociative and other trauma-related disorders including differential diagnosis
  • Recognize the prevalence of trauma-related and dissociative disorders in general medical settings
  • Describe an expanded nosology for dissociative and trauma-related disorders and possible revisions in diagnostic criteria (eg DSM-V)
  • Recognize the role of dissociation in mental disorders other than dissociative disorders
  • Develop the ability to monitor levels of one’s own secondary PTSD and develop strategies for prevention and coping
