This professional organization of 600 scientists selected primarily for their original research on effects of natural and synthetic compounds on human behavior, mind and brain has fostered cross-disciplinary communication and encouraged research careers since 1961.

The principal function of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) is to further research and education in neuropsychopharmacology and related fields by:

  • Promoting the interaction of a broad range of scientific disciplines of brain and behavior in order to advance the understanding of prevention and treatment of diseases of the nervous system including psychiatric, neurological, behavioral and addictive disorders
  • Encouraging scientists to enter research careers in fields related to these disorders and their treatment
  • Ensuring the dissemination of relevant scientific advances in these disorders.

It merged with the American Society of Internal Medicine [ASIM] and recently dropped the name of the latter Its mission is to enhance the quality and effectiveness of health care by fostering excellence and professionalism in the practice of medicine. ACP membership includes over 90,000 physicians in general internal medicine and related subspecialties, including cardiology, gastroenterology, nephrology, endocrinology, hematology, rheumatology, neurology, pulmonary disease, oncology, infectious diseases, allergy and immunology, and geriatrics.
