American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry [AAAP] is a not-for-profit scientific and professional organization whose members specialize in the clinical treatment of addictive disorders and related research and education. The AAAP originated in 1985 as the American Academy of Psychiatrists in Alcoholism and Anddictions [AAPAA[. In 1996, the organization assumed its current name.

The goals of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry [AAAP] are to:

  • Promote excellence clinical practice in addiction psychiatry
  • Educate the public to influence public policy regarding addictive illness
  • Promote accessibility of quality treatment for all patients
  • Provide continuing education for professionals in the field of addiction psychiatry
  • Disseminate new information in the field of addiction psychiatry
  • Encourage research on the etiology, prevention, identification, and treatment of the addictions

The official journal of AAAP is the American Journal on Addictions.
