Alateen, a part of Al-Anon Family Groups, helps teenage sons and daughters of alcoholics to cope with problems in their homes. These groups provide direct services to individuals by giving comfort, hope, and friendship to the family and friends of alcoholics, by providing information on alcoholism and sharing experience in coping with the disease, and by providing the opportunity to learn to grow spiritually.

Al-Anon publishes booklets and pamphlets, produces public service announcements for radio and television, cooperates with alcoholism treatment programs in supporting patients' families and friends and provides the public and professionals with information about their services.

Detail:

3-rd International Congress
"Psychiatry in General Practice - Healthy Minds, Healthy Lives"

(You can refer to the meeting's Web pages.)

February 7-9, 2008

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Event sponsored by: Al Noor Hospital

It is becoming increasingly recognized by all international scientific organizations that out of the ten leading causes of disability in The Global Burden of Disease world wide, five are psychological disorders, namely, Schizophrenia, Depression, Obsessive Compulsive, Dementia and Drub Abuse. The World Psychiatric Association [WPA], the American Psychiatric Association [APA] and the World Health Organization [WHO] have launched The Global Ant Stigma Campaign to fight the myths and misunderstanding surrounding those diseases. Stigma creates a vicious circle of alienation and discrimination which can lead to social isolation, inability to work, drug abuse, homelessness and excessive institutionalization-all of which diminish the quality of life of people suffering from psychological disorders and put a great stress on their families.

It is estimated that 23–45% of outpatient department patients are suffering from physical symptoms of psychogenic origin. This highlights the importance of a "psychological" approach to patients attending outpatient clinics. The WHO has recently recommended the integration of mental health into general medical practice for early detection, intervention and treatment. It has designed a special continuing medical education "CME" course for Primary Health Care [PHC] physicians.

Objectives:

  • Assess the global burden of psychiatric disease in developing countries
  • Discuss the role of the Psychiatrist toward being an "Adopter" versus "Innovator" in the field of transcultural psychiatry
  • Outline the recent developments in the management of depression
  • Identify the need for a team-approach for mental health workers in launching anti-stigma campaigns
  • Explain the key concepts in the use of novel anti-psychotic drugs and SSRIs (Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) as combined treatment modalities in evidence-based practice

Topics:

  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Depressive Disorder
  • Phobias
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder [PTSD]
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Suicide
  • Eating Disorder
  • Common Children Disorders
