The Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research [ABMR], a scientific society of approximately 260 members, was founded in 1978 to promote the science of behavioral medicine, from basic science to policy implications. Its members are investigators and clinician-investigators who have made substantive research contributions to the field of behavioral medicine and who reflect the multidisciplinary nature of the field. Established scientists in behavioral medicine become members of the Academy by invitation.

The purpose of the Academy is to:

  • Foster the integration of biomedical research with health-related behavioral science
  • Identify current and future areas of such research which have special merit
  • Provide a multidisciplinary forum for review of research findings and assessment of their applicability to prevention, diagnosis, treatment of, and rehabilitation from illness
  • Serve as a technical and educational resource to federal, academic, and legislative entities, as well as selected public bodies
  • Promote the highest research and professional standards within the field
  • Help develop guidelines for research training in behavioral medicine

Founded in September of 1993, the Academy for Eating Disorders [AED] is a multidisciplinary professional organization focusing on Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder and related disorders.The AED holds that effective treatment for eating disorder patients requires professionals from various disciplines working togther.

Objectives:

  • Promote the effective treatment and care of patients with eating disorders and associated disorders
  • Develop and Advance initiatives for the primary and secondary prevention of eating disorders
  • Provide for the dissemination of knowledge regarding eating disorders to members of the Academy, other professionals and the general public
  • Stimulate and Support research in the field
  • Promote multidisciplinary expertise within the Academy membership
  • Advocate for the field on behalf of patients, the public and eating disorder professionals
  • Assist in the development of guidelines for training, practice and professional conduct within the field
  • Identify and Reward outstanding achievement and service in the field.

The official publication of AED is the International Journal of Eating Disorders.
